![]() There are five dragon coins in every level. Likewise a cape will allow Mario and Yoshi to glide. Yoshi can climb when Mario has a cape, but he can't fly. The many variations on the colored Yoshi, colored Koopa shell combinations will be covered in a separate section below. Others like P blocks and Koopas are harder to swallow so Yoshi has to hold it in his mouth for about 90 seconds or so. Some objects, like Goombas, and coins are swallowed immediately, and give you a coin. Tapping the B button will make Yoshi try to swallow anything in front of him. Yoshi can run just as fast as Mario by holding the B button. This is important, because if you get hit by a bad guy while riding Yoshi, he will throw you off and run away, making it hard to get back on him. If you jump back off using the R button, Yoshi will sit there patiently waiting for you to grab his reins once again. If you find Yoshi, jump on his back by pressing A. There's almost never a good reason to go without Yoshi in Super Mario World. If you wish to slow a fall, using the glide feature of the cape, simply holding the A button while in midair will do the trick. Mario will climb for a short duration, but in order to continue flying, you must hold the B button and rock Mario back and forth using the right and left buttons on the D-Pad. To fly with the cape, you must run (holding the B button) for a sufficient distance (about the length of the screen) and then jump into the air. There is no limitation to the distance you can fly if you can master the timing and technique of it. When Mario is equipped with a cape, it is possible to both fly and glide. When he is big, he can use his R jump to break the yellow bricks, as well as to completely eliminate bad guys or bounce off of invulnerable bad guys. The A button produces a straightforward jump, while the R produces a twirling-jumping motion that allows Mario to do many things. The A button and R buttons serve as jump buttons. If you hold down and release the B button, Mario will drop it, allowing you to easily pick it up again. If you hold up on the D-Pad and release the B button, Mario will throw his held object straight up in the air. Once an item is picked up, Mario will pick it up or throw it when the B button it released. Holding the B button will allow Mario to run quickly as well as pick up various objects in the world. When equipped with a fire flower, tapping the B button will fire a fireball, a technique useful for permanently clearing bad guys off the level. The B button serves multiple roles in the game, so you will soon become very familiar with it. Once inside a level, the D-Pad is used to move Mario around. Game save options can be brought up by pressing Start, and Select brings up a progress log to give you an idea of how much of the game you've completed. By standing on a level and pressing R, Luigi can be used instead of Mario. Mario can be moved around the world map with the D-Pad, and he can enter a level by moving onto the level and pressing A. Mario must progress along the paths of Dinosaur Land to get to Bowser's Castle, but many treacherous levels and smaller castles must be cleared first. Level layout is pretty straightforward, with a world map representing an overview of Dinosaur Land. In addition seven of Bowser's minions are holding baby Yoshis captive and as a good Samaritan it is Mario's responsibility to free them too. Once again, she is captured and being held hostage, and it is your job as Mario or Luigi to get her back. ![]() Unfortunately Princess Peach can't seem to stay out of Bowser's clutches. The main game, and the reason you shelled out your hard earned money for it, is Super Mario World. It basically consists of punching the blocks to flip the enemies, and then killing them and collecting coins in order to score points. As previously stated there's not much to it. Again we are given the option of playing the old Mario World game. There are two single player modes on the cartridge. The object of the multiplayer game is to score the most points, and survive the longest. ![]() Once flipped over you can run over to them and by simply touching them, kill them and score points. The object of the game is to jump up and pound the blocks underneath the bad guys and flip them over. with up to three additional people using the GBA link cable. Basically it allows you to play the original Mario Bros. Since the Multiplayer is the lighter of the two, we'll get it out of the way first. This GBA title comes with two gameplay modes, Single Player and Multiplayer. ![]()
